I’ve done it again. As I walked past the window I instinctively slow down and turn my face to look. That is when my eyes locked onto them. I step in through the doorway into the bright lights and loud rock music designed to entice and seduce the shopper. I walk over as that familiar sensation comes over me. My heart flutters, my head feels light. I feel excitement build. I feel the flow of Dopamine or whatever the hell that chemical is that makes you feel fucking awesome when you shop. There they are. Emerald green leather with cream and black fleck snakeskin with patent black nine inch heels. Open toe, fucking gorgeous! I seriously do not need another pair, yet that part of my brain that has no self control says ‘oh yeah you do!’ So I ask if they have my size, I am sure they won’t. My feet are gigantean. Well for a girl that is. 'Oh you do have them? Fabulous!' Alright but I bet they are too small across the top of my foot. The sales girl brings the shoes out, they sit nestled in the box surrounded by tissue paper. I smell the fresh leather and see glimpses of emerald green and patent black shine through. I draw my breath in quickly. I reach in and my fingers touch the soft leather. Oh yes. Yes. Holding the shoe up in my hands I slowly turn it around and examine every angle of this beauty. She is a beauty. I. Must. Have. Her. I slip the shoe over my foot and I suddenly feel like Cinderella. OMG it fits like a glove. I put the second shoe on and stand to walk around. They feel like home. They look amazing. My ankles look thin and my arse – well that still looks big, but not because of the shoes. I tell myself it must be destiny that they become mine. I pay and leave.

I drive my car into the driveway and as I pull into the garage the door to the house opens. Two little faces greet me with giant smiles. The kind that melt your heart every time. I lift my shopping bags out of the car and bit by bit unload into the kitchen as the children run around me vying for a glimpse of any treats I may have brought home. Finally I bring my new shoes inside. My beauties. I take them into the bedroom and sit on the edge of my bed. Slowly I open the box and gaze longingly at my new prize. Oh yes they were definitely worth the money. I put them on and walk slowly around the room as my children watch with curiosity. I feel lost in that reverie that the experience of perfect new shoes brings.

Now, amongst the chaos of life with small children I need to find an opportunity to wear them again. Wear them for real. Out in the adult world.
